Jealousy is a favourite songwriter’s theme; although the object of such envy is normally a person – this time it is a cat.

The Cat Lover

I wish I had fur, I wish I had whiskers,
I wish I could purr, or leap from windows,
‘Cos the cat that can - it’s got it made,
A space in her bed, where I once laid.
They both have paws, and you’d never know,
That sharpened claws are hiding below,
One strikes in play, the other in war,
Either way, I’m scratched and scored.
A pillow to rest, a place to dream,
Sour milk for me; the cat’s got the cream.
Now our romance, she disavows,
And all it took, is one meow
If there was someone with no means to attack,
Who I could caress and would not strike back,
There’s no chance with feminine pride,
Kittens united, lovers divide.
