My Breakdown Lover

© Colin Tommis

I used to go from A to B,
To places I would like to see,
But I feared that I would be waylaid,
Stationary, at least delayed,
With bits falling off or going wrong,
Going flat, sounding off-song,
So I sought a pair of skilful arms,
To keep me safe from all those harms,
And I found them all so fully formed,
With this chap in uniform.

There goes my breakdown lover,
Whatever my travelling malaise,
His piece-de-resistance,
Is roadside assistance,
Never more than a phone call away.

Don’t know his full service history,
Mystery is a part of his plan,
But if my tuning needs tweaking,
Or my bodywork is creaking,
He’s my personal membership man.

If I’ve no transmission,
No spark or ignition,
He has my permission to go fault finding,
He takes longer than expected,
With forward selected,
And he has perfected,
The art of careful driving.

Home start, relay cover,
With him I don’t fell like a spare part,
He’s underneath my bonnet,
And stolen from it,
A lead with which,
To jump-start my heart.
